When is 'Too Much' in Video Marketing?

Video is quickly becoming a really popular form of marketing, and many small businesses are starting to jump to the medium.

But one big problem is putting too much into one video.

This is definitely a normal problem that many businesses face. Your business could be multi-faceted, have different key audiences, offer different products or services. And you want your video to show that.

And while that is definitely possible, it can lead to a huge problem: confusion.

Remember, video is a form of communication. Your video is essentially talking to the viewer, and the number one thing you don’t want is any misunderstanding or any confusion. But imagine if your video speaks like a run-on sentence, or has too many different parts. People feel confused and they tune out.

Your video should be summed up in one sentence.

This is actually something that professional filmmakers do - they create a logline.

A logline is a one sentence summary of your film. So even if it’s a 2 hour blockbuster, the main idea needs to be condensed into one sentence.

The reason why is because if your film or video is longer than a sentence, it can get complicated. That leads to one too many storylines, or one too many characters, or even scenes that could have been cut out. Because you’re trying to fit it all in, you eventually take away time from what’s important.

It stops you from developing your main character or going into detail in your story. And that takes away from your overall video.

How to Avoid This Problem:

Set Goals for your Project

It’s important to figure out what you want from the project. What goals are you trying to achieve? What does success look like?

With all of our projects, we always ask what the goal of each project is. That way, we can figure out the best approach for your film and craft it for your needs.

Plan, Plan, Plan

Our best projects have come from extensive planning. By planning before we show up with a camera, we save a lot of time by filming what we need for the project. It also helps us in the edit because everyone is on board with the direction.

By spending some time planning your film, you can make sure that your project perfectly fits your goals and that your message is clear and concise.

Look at the Bigger Picture

It’s easy to get bogged down in the little details. This happens to us, too. But by taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, you can remember what you’re really trying to achieve with the project.

At the end of the day, you want to make sure that what you’re communicating is incredibly clear and easy to understand. That’s why we spend a lot of time doing pre-production for our clients - because we want to make sure that when people watch it, they understand your message and connect to it.

Or, if you’re ready to talk about your next project…
